Gasket hints?

Like many others, after 3 weeks of egg ownership, my gasket failed.  The fine folks at BGE sent me a high heat version for installation, and I've already done the acetone thing and cleaned up the rim.  I was just wondering if anyone has any good tips on the actual installation process - I have my super 77 already and am planning on using the paint brush method for applying it, and am not planning on taking the dome off.  Any "lessons learned" though would be appreciated.

    I did a search this AM...typed in Big Green Egg Gasket Replacement. Found a video that explains the whole replacement process. Big Green Egg Gasket Replacement - You tube. Search was on Yahoo !!  

    The Naked Whiz site shows how to install the Rutland gasket. Which will be my next gasket of choice.

    My advice, throw the "high heat" version in the trash and install a Rutland or run no gasket at all.  If you elect to install the BGE replacement don't worry too much about the prep cause you WILL be doing it again.

    I painted the rim with the paintbrush method, but sprayed the gasket material. Hard to brush it on the gasket. Only spray what you are going to use for the first rim. After spraying have a helper hold the tail as you place it. Repeat for the second rim. Assuming we are talking about the nomex.

    I agree with BOWHUNR.  If you're going to spend the time putting on another gasket, go with the permanent solution of a Rutland, bonded with Permatex Ultra Copper.  You can do it for under $20 for a XL and even less for a "L" and smaller.

    Go without..................
    Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

    I tried without and my lump took a long time to go out - don't want to be wasteful. And I thought I read that the Rutland was a potential food hazard, so that's why nomex is my choice. Wasn't planning on spraying both the rim and the gasket, but I guess that makes sense. Thanks.

    My nomex has held up fine so far. It was free so why not use it. When it's done I may try something else. I think they do recommend the 77 on both surfaces now. Also, don't let the gasket hang over on the inside of the egg.

    If you are going to use the nomex put it in the dryer on hot for at least fifteen minutes. It is known to shrink if you don't

    As you install it do not try and stretch it. You will have plenty of material. I wonder if this is what causes the shrinkage??
