Temperature Control Devices

I was wondering people's thoughts on purchasing a temperature control device to use on my Egg.  I have been looking and reading up on the ique 110.  Any thoughts and/or advice?

    I have a BBQGURU CYBERQII, it has made my long cooks more consistant and less stressfull.

    I wouldn't waste my money on any gadget like that. I smoke 16hrs with no problem, all you need is a good lump charcoal and to know how to use the vents correctly. Save your money and buy some other accessories.

    I got a bbq guru digiQ DX 2. love it. others have some neat features.
    I grill therefore I am.....not hungy.

    I only use mine for low & slows and jerky but I love my DigiQ.

    Just curious as wwhy you have an egg then? Why not did a hole in the ground and start the fire by rubbing 2 sticks together?
    I wouldn't waste my money on any gadget like that. I smoke 16hrs with no problem, all you need is a good lump charcoal and to know how to use the vents correctly. Save your money and buy some other accessories.

    I've been looking at getting a controller. Not sure if I ever would, but I have been looking at the iQue 110, the auber instruments controller nad now the new BBQ Guru party Q. All seem to be fairly simple devices without all the bells and whistles that some have and are in the same price range. Sorry if now you have two more options to research.

    Bonzai...A whole in the ground is a little prehistoric dont ya think? It's not that I don't find those things useful, it's that when I plan on doing a "low and slow" smoke, I enjoy checking the fire. I thought that was part of being good at the Q. Sorry if I stepped on your toes buddy.

    I wasn't stepping on your toes. I enjoy gadgets. But that doesn't mean I pull a Ron Popeil and "set it and forget it" when I do a low and slow with the CyberQII; I set on the porch and check thhe display while I am surfing, or if I over at the shop I can check without totally interupting what I am doing.

    I love having a wireless unit that can check egg and internal temps. each fire i build tends to have a life of its own and has to be attended to a little differently. many things can have an impact on how your fire acts. I plan to cook in some pretty extreme cold temps. The idea of being able to monitor egg and internal temps from inside the house has lots of merit in my book. Once i get things stabilized, i'm usually good to go, but that process usually requires multiple trips to the egg for some tweaking (not such a big deal when the weathers nice, but the weather is usually not that nice in my part of the country), you also run into temperature fluctuations each time you raise the lid, which may require a vent adjustment (more monitoring). for a 18 hour, never open the lid, 250 temp session, you may not need such gadgetry, but for many other situations, its really nice to have. Maverick seems to be the unit of choice.

    Stoker here. I'm having an issue with mine at the moment but the team at Rock's is taking care of me.

    I think some of us get a temp controller because we can and want to...certainly not a necessity but they do come in handy!

    Update - Rock's BBQ took care of my Stoker replacing the LCD, 3 or 4 buttons, some plugs and other stuff due to water damage.  All for $20.  Looks good as new now and plan to break it out this weekend.  Great customer service.

    Could someone post some close up pics of the DigiQ? I would like to use the mechanical part of it and convert it to control the lower vent opening.

    bigguy, what mechanical part are you talking about?  The only thing mechanical on a DigiQ is the blower.  Here is my review of it.  You can see pretty much everything in the photos: DigiQ II review

    I have a stoker and love it.  I understand I can control it using the vents but I lke the toy aspect of it.  I like having it on at work and receiving updates.

    I saw the open hole and i figure there was an adjustable air opening to aid in temp control. Is there another product that has a mechanical movement to open/ close the air supply? I want to add a controler to my lower air vent to regulate the temp.

    All teh controllers I know about regulate airflow with an on/off blower mechanism.  A long time ago there was a web page that folks passed around of a guy who had built a device that controlled a motor that drove a screw that moved the lower vent door.  But that was  a long time ago.  I doubt it is still out there.

    Can the blower seal off enough air to control the low temps? If so, that could work.

    Not sure what you mean.  All the devices I have tested can control low temperatures.  That is their main strength, keeping low and slow fires going overnight.  The stoker blower has a little flap that attempts to cut off airflow when the blower isn't running.  The Guru blower has a manual damper that you can set to an appropriate opening so that only so much air can pass through the blower when it isn't running.  The iQue doesn't have any dampers, but you can put a washer in the hose to cut down the airflow if you find the hose itself allows too much air through.  The Auber Instruments blower also has a door that flops shut when the blower isn't running.

    I love gadgets, but after close to a year of the BGE I really have not seen a need for anything other than more meat.

    I have the iq 110 and love it, its simple to use, plus i have a 12 v rechareable battery so i dont have to use extension cord and you can build a rain box.
