There was a cool 2 level cast iron grate posted on here recently where the top level would swing out so you could get to the lower level. Someone can probably help with a link.

The above mentioned rig is a two tier swing rack from www.ceramicgrillworks.com  . After seeing it here I went to the web site and checked out the videos about it.  I then called the company and spoke to the "video man".  I pulled the plug and got it,  it works great on the LBGE. Best features are the variable height and access to the lower rack.  Very well constructed.

    Check it out-

The price is fair and the quality is wicked! Also the stuff you can do with the adjustable rig is amazing! It cost almost the same as a plate setter with a pizza stone! I wouldn't be able to cook like I do with my egg without my adjustable rig! Is support and help is also amazing! I purshased to large rig so far from him and four of my friends also purshased one from them as well after trying mine ou!

The adjustable rig is a quality product & the company & the folks running it are good folks, but for those who are not at a point financially to be able to buy all the goodies at this stage, I have a suggestion...

I use a couple fire bricks that I place on my lower level grid, and then I place another grid on top of that.  If I need "more" height I just stand them up on their short edges.  (I call this my "hillbilly hightech" setup, as it is functional, just not "pretty") :D

Other solutions I've seen are some folks will get some u-bolts & nuts & screw them onto another grid, others will cut some pieces of square tubing & place them between the 2 grids - heck, I think I've seen where some folks even used aluminum cans...

Really, anything that can w/stand the heat & gets the grids separated such that you can have multiple cooking layers will work - EGG-speriment & see what you can come up with!!!  Remember, you don't have to go out & spend a bunch of $$ to come up w/ something, but I know there are folks who like to have all the fancy toys, and that's cool... to each their own!!
Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup... Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. - Bruce Lee

I like easy to use, functional toys over all the fancy ones. To me, after spending as much as I did on the EGG, a $125 is a lot of money for some cast iron. I don't even have my plate setter yet ...

Up till now, I have taken the grate from my 18" WSM rest it on the fire ring and have been using some firebrick as you have described and it works quite well. It's just a pain when I want to add some wood, which I'm always forgetting before starting. Be so much easier with the ...... toys functional or otherwise!
