New Version of XL Big Green Egg

I have made the decision to purchase the XL BGE and would like to know if I should check to be sure the one I buy from my supplier is the newest version. I have heard that there have been changes made to the XL in the last couple of years, and I want to be sure I get the current model.

If so, what should I look for that will identify if it is the most current model?

Thanks to everyone for such GREAT ideas! This forum had a lot to do with me making the decision to become an egghead.

I would ask.....but you could also go on the BGE site and note the details/features so you know what to look for.  However, these things last forever so unless there is some new feature not sure you would miss out on anything.

I did find this when they made a change to the XL last year.

I think they did make some fairly significant changes to the design of the XL in the past couple of years.  The old style has a "squatty" looking dome, and the newer style is rounded.  I think you want to make sure not to get a squatty one ;)

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • Yes, the dome is a little taller, and all of the newer nest have locking wheels.

  • You should not have to worry about getting an old XL, unless your supplier has had them in the warehouse a long time.  Just check the nest, make sure you get the nest with locking front casters.  And spend the extra money and get a nest handler, it will make your life so much easier when you have to move it.

  • Choke on Smoke, those are both of the old style models with the short dome. The "guts" changed slightly and Fred did a review of it. There is a newer version with a taller dome that is more rounded and makes the profile taller.

My mistake, I never watched the video, I just assumed they did the insides and the taller dome at the same time.
I bought my XL last July with the new taller dome.

  • I just watched Fred's video and now have at least some idea of what to look for in the newer version. I tend to be a little suspicious of retailers trying to unload previous model years to make room for new. Thanks for everyones help.
