Can anyone enlighten me about 'seasoning' or burning the coals at high temp before the first use?

Not sure what you're asking about? The BGE doesn't require any seasoning. It is ready to go on first fire.
In fact, if you're worried about your gasket, I'd suggest you don't cook over 400 degrees for the first 5-6 cooks to let it go through the heat/cool cycle.

Never heard of seasoning the Egg.

It doesn't hurt to do lower temp cooks at first. You still could lose a gasket but no worries, plenty of instruction here on how to replace and BGE will send you a new white "nomex" one for free.  Not sure why they just don't ship these with every new egg.

Up here, north of the 49th parallel, Canada eh?,  I was told that the nomex gaskets are not supplied as they have yet to pass testing by the Federal food agency regarding chemical exposure during burn off.  I burnt the original felt the 4th time I cooked on my large egg, then found out about the lower temp cooks mentioned above.  Replaced the felt and have been successful with it although the inside edges are burnt off due to pizza cooks.  Talked to an experieced egger who orderd the nomex from high-cue.com for all his eggs and he was articluate and quite alive.  As is the nomex gasket - after numerous pizza cooks
