There is probably some great software out there, but I had bad luck with a bunch of recipes on a program, on a Mac, that I could not transfer to the same program on a PC, so I just use Word and set up my own file system.
For me it works fine and I can also scan recipes out of magazines, etc. -
A lot of us on here use Living Cookbook. RichardFl is the resident authority on how it works but it is fairly simple and not expensive.

I have been using Living Cookbook since '05 and currently have over 15000 recipes in it and am very happy. Try their demo. It is pc NOT mac friendly.
email me if you have further questions.

Somehow I knew you would find this thread Richard.

I have often wondered how you did it! :P

Over a year ago, I did the same research you are doing now. The answers came back to me like this:
(a) If you own a Mac, then use Mac Gourmet.
(b) If you own a PC, then use Living Cookbook. (also, you can download all sorts of recipes from the nakedwhiz.com into it.)
I've used both. They are intuitive and importing recipes from websites on both is a breeze. -
mac gourmet for me. Added plus that there is are iPad and iphone apps.Egging on two larges + 36" Blackstone griddle

I have found something that to me works really well. I use google docs and keep all of my recipes on line. I can access them anywhere there is a pc or on my phone. I love the fact that if I see something on line I can just copy and paste..
