does anyone know of anyone that makes fire grates for small bges? i'm just wanting to be able to remove the old lump and ash without my firegrate twisting and the ash ending up down in the bottom of the egg.
thanks in advance.

Unless something has been released recently, you will have to make something. I turned mine upside down and that helps a little.
The firebox design just isn't helpful with this issue.

maybe try putting the lump grate for the large into the small and see how it works. might even help get the small to temps fasterfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Jason,
You could put it on (3) carriage bolt stilts that raise it up a 1/4" or so to get a little extra air as well. -
Cast iron drain covers are available at hardware stores, they look just like BGE grates and come in a variety of sizes.

no tilting or dumping with 3 spare legs!

i'd love one like that, but i have zero skills! -
I go back and forth with the three legs version, and the expanded metal that Leo displayed. I like the three legs method, but I think your picture is of a large grate? When I have the three bolts in there, its harder to clear the ashes out of the bottom because the area is just small on the small egg. I like the expanded metal the best because it gets the small hot faster, but it shifts around when I try to stir the old lump. I finally resorted to just taking the lump out after each cook in the small and shaking it in a strainer to remove the ash, and then storing it in a lump bucket where I use it when used lump isnt a concern. A lot of people on the bubba keg forum use something like this, and remove the fire grate all together:

I have a few stainless bowls that I have picked up, I just havent gotten around to getting it done. I think it would be great for the small, makes ash removal a cinch, and I would think the airflow issues would improve too.
