Has anyone tried the self adhesive Nomex gasket material? Pro or cons?

I got the one from Http://www.high-que.com. And it's been great. Solid and tight.

You definitely need to clean the egg well if you want to get good adhesion.

My friend got his through them and loves it. He likes it better than the Rutland he has on his other Egg.

My new gasket will be that one. Easy to install. No need to take the lid off.

I also have replaced my XL gasket with one from
Http://www.high-que.com.
It's been great and very easy to install.

Bought one from high-que.com. It's holding up great (have done several high-heat burn offs, steaks, and pizzas).

If the Nomex is an older release of BGE's I wouldn't touch it. You can see the results from Frank's post above.

Here is the same adhesive on felt.

Supposedly Aramid (Nomex) need's pre-shrinking before install. If that is the case, unless a provider preshrinks before the adhesive is put on the gasket material there most likely will problems.

Does the kit come with enough for dome and base or is this a base only gasket?
Thank you,

Thanks everyone. I was looking at the one from High Q. As with most things Egg, there are differing opinions. I appreciate the responses.

• I have not gone to the high heat one yet myself, but have heard rave reviews from several people that use the BGE Nomex with the 3M spray on adhesive.

The key is cleaning the dome and base edge very well before installing.

Wire bristle brush in a cordless drill works very well to get the old adhesive off. Along with a little acetone.

I hope you realize using a drill, sandpaper or sander, file, gouge, anything that will damage the surface will...

1. change the matching of the base and dome
2. void your warranty (if you question that, call BGE service to verify.

BGE service also said not to use petroleum based cleaners on the surface.

• Grandpa, will changing from felt (as originally installed by the local dealer) to Nomex alter the 'matching of base and dome'?

What do you recommend, please? Or can you point me to an informed discussion? Thank you.

• I've used a 3m paint stripper wheel on my large Egg 3 times and haven't noticed anything going wrong.  It doesn't grind off any ceramic, FWIW.

Re: the nomex offered with adhesive on it, I asked High-Que about that and they said if you use the method they recommend, it won't need to be pre-shrunk.  YMMV....

• I have the high-que nomex gasket with adhesive backing and I have done many many high temperature cooks and 0 issues.   But then again it took me 2-3 hours of scraping and acetone to get all the old crud off before installing the new one.
