Downward force on large lid?

Hello, being this is my first egg I really don't have another to compare and have not used anyone else's..

My lid will hang open by itself maybe about 1/4 of the way closed after that will come down pretty hard if not hanging onto the handle. I'm wondering if that is the norm? Any further than that 1/4 or so it will fall down with good force if not held on by the handle. No problem with knowing that but wondering if it should hang by itself further down the close?

Subject came up as my 12 yr old daughter said she wants to learn the grill and I'm afraid she'll let loose on the way down. Egg is fairly new maybe 2 years old at the most.
