Infrared Thermometer - Pretty Cool
Options
Spring Chicken
Posts: 10,255
My Infrared Thermometer came a few minutes ago. If you recall, a few days ago I posted that buy.com
had some good prices on them.
I spent an extra $5 and got the upgrade one and I'm glad I did. This thing is cool (Pun intended).
As soon as I installed the included battery and switched it from C° to F° I shot a test of where I was sitting at my desk. 72° I turned and pointed it at the A/C outlet in the ceiling. 51° Just that fast.
It'll get a workout tomorrow when I smoke some ribs.
I think I'll also walk around the house and check to see if my cool air is leaking out anywhere. Then maybe go down to Galveston Beach and check out the "HOT" .... ("Wait Sweetie, don't hit me no more! I'll stay away from Galveston Beach with my new toy!"
Cheeeezzz... you would think a man my age could point his toy at a pretty girl now and then without getting in trouble for it!

Gosh Leroy I can just imagine it's one of those things that gives you all the info. & then don't know what to do with it......specially the senoritas readings...
-
I you used it at your place Beli, it would melt I'm sure.

Galveston does have a few "perks" in the summer.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas

Just don't go pointing that "Old Toy" at the girls on the beach or you're really going to get. :woohoo:
Cheers,

Great price! Mine partially paid for itself by letting me monitor where my air leaks and poor insulation were costing me more for heating/cooling.
Its great for baking. Can tell in a second just how hot the stone is. -
Now you can check the temp on you R/C's and not have to touch them. Great weight reducing idea.
-
Thanks for the tip Spring Chicken. I must've missed the original post. What does the upgrade get you? Larger temperature range?

Here's the link to all of them.

Mine has the laser pointer. It was actually cheaper but I had to pay shipping.
Worth it.

Daytona Beach did too. But I was wearing glasses back then and when I drove on the beach I had problems with eyeball smears on my glasses.
Spring "LOOKATTHAT!!!ANDTHT!!!ANDTHAT" Chicken -
I think there's a concealed permit or something for old pharts that says we can look but we can't aim.
Spring "I'm Half Blind Too" Chicken -
Thanks for the tip. I'm going with the same one you did.

You do realize that I bought it to use as a toy, don't you LOL

I just went out and checked the temperature of Lily Large after using her a couple of hours ago to cook some wings. The dome thermometer said 200° and when I raised the lid and took a reading of the inside of the Egg, the temperature was 202°.
Not bad.

Pointing is one thang, hitting is another...

Leroy..you will be amazed when doing a cook with the platesetter and pizza stone at how much longer it takes for the stone to get to your desired temp...think pizza here....I used to think 1/2 to 3/4 hour stabalized and the pizza stone would have to be up to temp...well I was wrong I have seen an hour or more for the actual pizza stone to get to 475 or 500...definately a cool toy to own and one that has many real world uses
-
You're telling me that my new 'toy' has a practical side? Who would'a thunk it!!!
That's like telling me that my smoke ring maker can be used for other applications.

"Easy Leroy" Hummmmmm! I like it. If I ever wear out my welcome as Spring Chicken, I can return as Easy Leroy. Or I could use it as the title for Chapter 70 in my book.
Thanks.

Thanks Leroy!
I've been waiting for just this kinda deal.
It really does pay to keep an eye on the birds around you. :P -
Got one a couple of weeks ago from Sears...truck hood was 155, sidewalk 136 in the sun, 116 out of sun, plast ic table in sun was 144...also noticed how long the plate setter took to reach temp & to cool off as well

Wow! I've got to get outside more with my new toy. There's a whole new world of things that need check'n.
Spring "Hot Foot'n It" Chicken -
Those are pretty cool. We've got a few laying around the lab that we use to check the temperature of samples when they come in. I remember when we first got them, we were shooting temps off everything to see what the results would be. Fun quickly wore off, they aren't as much fun when they are part of your job and not just a toy.

I LOVE mine, but I will warn you, the further you are from the 'target' you want to measure, the more the air between you and it influences the reading.
I find if I'm more than a foot or so away, the reading gets much less reliable. makes sense, just took me a few across the room readings of Mrs. 3Pedals to realize her temp wasn't REALLY 76 degrees. -
Other than checking things around your house and dome and stone temps, I can't see a reason to buy one of these. I mean, you can't check meat temps which is 99% of what I check when doing a cook. I am just trying to figure out what I would use this for when doing low and slow long cooks.
