When/where wood chunks

Is there is tangible difference in placing 2 or 3 wood chunks throughout the lump before starting the fire and placing chunks on an already lit/burning fire? If placing chunks on a lit fire do you need to wait a while before placing the meat on the grill? Thanks for all your help already- my first 2 cooks, a spatchcock chicken and baby back ribs were better than advertised.

I put 1/3 lump, then some chunks of wood, add more lump, 2 or 3 more chunks then fill and light. That is usually for an over nighter.
