What are these black gloves I'm seeing?

Watching the different bbq shows on tv such as Best in Smoke and the Ultimate Bbq showdown on CBS, I'm seeing the cooks handling the hot food with black gloves on. To me they just look like a black version of latex gloves but it doesn't seem like that would be enough to handle a butt straight off the egg.

Are there good gloves out there that insulate well and still allow you to have the dexterity to pull pork by hand or pull ribs straight off the egg?

They could be latex. Ronco sells a glove for their rotisserie and you are able to take hot food right out of it and take it off the skewers. It could also be the Big egg glove able to handle heat upto about 450 degrees.

I haven't seen the show you're referring to, but I have a set of black PVC-coated gloves that I bought from the Ceramic Grill Store, that allow me to handle very hot foods:

Note: These sorts of gloves are NOT for handling things like plate-setters, pizza stones, dutch ovens, etc. Leave those for the heavy leather fireplace gloves, or Orka silicone mitts.

I think they are just black Nitrile Gloves. Nitrile seems to be replacing latex because some people are allergic to latex. I think they are just using them to keep from having to wash their hands as much.

They work really well for rotating meat during a cook, such as ribs, a roast, etc.

They're PVC coated, making them much heavier than any latex/Nitrile gloves you can get.

As with most work gloves, they're big on me, but they fit my brother fine.

Oh yeah.... They are a neoprene coated work glove, and come in standard "cuff length" or "mid arm" length. I think the ones I buy are called "Claw Hand", and might be 5 or 6 dollars a pair. They are pretty stiff, but clean up nicely. And yes, you can handle some pretty hot meats with them.

I have some black neoprene gloves..kinda military surplus stuff I bought on line years ago..they work well with hot meat but they are not insulated..think I paid like a buck for em..haven't seen the shows or the gloves you are reffering to but it sounds similar to what I have...

I use the 17" Orka's to move grates, stones ... A little clumsy but very effective. The 17" do pose a slight problem when cooking in the winter - tough to get jacket sleeves down in there.

Question about the Orka measurement... is that from mitt tip to cuff edge, cuff measurement alone, or what? Being female, I'm afraid the 17's would be too long for me, but would like to get as much protection as possible. I think the other size is only 11".

Mitt tip to cuff edge. They hit me just below the elbow. For me this is particularly helpful when turning steaks being cooked with high heat on the spider, low in the box.

I haven't been able to find them locally, but there are several internet sources.

I also have a pair of the thicker gloves many folks have posted and I like them for moving butts and such off the egg and pulling pork as well. They are very insulated and I can handle anything hot food without any issue.

What are these black gloves I'm seeing?
