Silicone tape?

So I've been thinking of easy ways to protect the wires on my thermometer from heat.
Google reveals that they make "silicone tape", resistant up to 500 degrees.
Has anyone tried wrapping their wires in this? It seems like a good option to provide some protection.

Not that specific site, but similar tape. I just googled "Silicone tape" out of curiosity and found out that it does, indeed, exist!

Just a thought - most all probes for Polder type thermometers fry at 396°. Using them at dome temps in excess of that is asking for trouble silicone protected wires or not. You are better off buying a Thermapen.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I think most use these sensors for extended cooks at traditional roasting temps or less.

I hear you - I have a Thermapen too. I just think prolonged exposure to heat has shortened the life of my therm wires. -
Several years ago I purchased a roll of Contronics tubing for this same purpose. I then made ferrules out of brass tubing to keep the stuff from unraveling.
It worked well for about a year, but that probe also got fried. I never went back to make another one!
Since then I just wrap my probes with foil.
Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
I also find that a wrap with HD foil works just fine!!

RP, you crack me up some times. For what you spent on the Cotronics tubing, you probably could've replaced the probe four times. :laugh: and, you have waaaay too much time on your hands.

but somebody here liked my idea so much that he bought the rest of that tubing from me so I came out whole.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
