I purchased a new lens for my DSLR this weekend. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8
I take a lot of pictures of family (mostly the little ones), which means a lot of movement, and usually not ver good light. The kit lens for my camera has a much smaller maximum aperture at 50mm...5ish, so this new lens should allow me to shoot much faster in lower light. It's also clearer than my other lenses. And at $140...
And it also obviously allows more control over depth of field.
And yes, I cleaned my grate before I cooked on it.
But mostly I got it for the family portraits. This photo wouldn't have been usable, if I had had to use a flash.
Okay, so it's woosday...here's a flower pic. Pear tree in front of our condo. Taken with my 18-55mm zoom (kit lens), earlier in the afternoon, the day I later went out to buy the new lens.

Third shot just grabs your heart. WOW....Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

Beautiful portrait Ben!
These were Fiddleheads a week ago

Great pictures. A new lens is great fun to play with.
Ever wonder what the egg is looking at when we sneak a peek?
-
It is a fun lens. I use if for indoor stuff at church and its biggest use is for karate tournaments. Its focus is hit or miss for that and I found a rented 24-70L does a lot better. I normally have to use 3200 ISO to get a 1/400 -1/500 shutter speed to capture the action. I need to break down and buy Noise Ninja someday so I can work on post processing the pictures. SLRs sure are fun though.
-
LOL I like the last one.
-
Ben, congrats on your new "nifty fifty". Love the 1.8 and depth of field. I bought a used one few years ago on CL ($60 ) but don't use it often enough, tend to use my walk-around Sigma zoom most of the time.

A little snack while camping this weekend

I've got the same lens for my Nikon. I love it. Keep the great pics coming!

Somebody has to much time on his hands. great pictures. I shot a Nikon 3000. I shot more sports then anything

Very nice Boilerman Ben.
I have not been up to much lately but for those that don't see much of our desert here is on of our cacti coming into bloom.
Cheers,

fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
My go-to lens in just about any situation. 50 mm prime will become your best friend, especially shooting children.
Here's a few from mine:

The "nifty fifty" is a capable lens, especially at its price point. Sure, you could have saved a few bucks by shopping around for a used one but WTH. We have BGEs and not Webers.
-
Thanks, Mickey.
It ain't the photo that grabs my heart, though. "Wrapped around her finger" doesn't begin to describe it. -
Thanks, Gary. So far, I'm really happy with the clarity and the larger aperture...and the price, of course. Until now, the 18-55mm kit lens has gotten 99% of the action. I'm struggling to figure out what I'm going to do on vacation. In two months, we're making a trip to Glacier/Yellowstone/Jackson Hole, and I'd like to practice landscapes. But the 18-55mm lens I have rotates as it focusses, which will make use of a polarizing filter (and a hood, for that matter) inconvenient. What to do, what to do, what to do?

Well a man has to do SOMETHING while the lump is coming up to temp. -
I like that third photo...fun with photoshop. That's another purchase I haven't made yet.
-
Do you mind me asking where you got the lens?
-
Local camera shop. Had a heck of a time finding one, now that Wolf/Ritz doesn't carry Canon (or rather, Canon won't deal through Wolf/Ritz). I was about to just order from Amazon, but I found a shop that had one. Best Buy apparently only carries the f/1.4 and 1.2.

Ben, my cheapo walk around lens is a Sigma 17-70 (I could be wrong with the numbers), I used to frequent this forum until it got knocked out by eggheadforum :silly:

After looking at the photo, it does look superimposed, but I just played with contrast and saturation in that pic, I believe. But yes, photoshop does wonders when you shoot RAW

Papantla flyers performing their ritual in Puerto Vallarta. I took these a couple of years ago. The ritual consists of dance and the climbing of a 30 meter pole (about 90 feet) from which four of the five participants then launch themselves tied with ropes to descend to the ground. The fifth remains on top of the pole, dancing and playing a flute and drum. According to myth, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought

Great pictures! Thank you for sharing.

Yep, that third shot was absolutely beautiful Ben!
Nice lens. -
I've got the 24-70L series lens and it's my go to favorite.
-
I don't find it necessary to mount the lens hood when I use the circualr polarizer. Just use the CP.....you'll be fine. The 24-70L would be a great lens for what you're gonna do. And you can rent one.
-
I love BBQ'd thighs.....especially the samll ones. They're like grill candy!!
-
Ben, try B&H Photo in New York. Excellent web site....great prices and service. Been buying from them for years.
