Seasoning some pans

Over the past couple of weeks I've been working on seasoning some pans.
I found an older cast iron frying pan - put it on the coals with the egg as hot as possible to strip off the finish. Removed any rust with vinegar and neutralized with soda. Applied a very thin layer of flax seed oil, then back in to the egg, indirect at about 500 F for an hour, then closed up the egg and let it sit until cool. Repeated about 6 times. Essentially any time I cooked on the egg - I'd do another application of the oil at the end of the cook.

I'm working on the griswold frying pan and the round griddle now - they are in the egg right now getting their surface stripped.

That looks great, I'm wondering how you clean the rust with vinegar. Could you please give more detail about it.
Thanks,

The first cast iron pan I picked up at a local thrift store for a couple of bucks. The paella pan I had to buy online - it was a little more spendy.
The last two I picked up when we were driving down to Lancaster, PA a couple of weeks ago - there is an antique/junque shop we always stop at on the way (unfortunately this year we discovered that it will be closing to make way for a storage facility) and everything was being sold off at half price. So I didn't pay too much for those either. They did have a beautiful Griswold round griddle - but half of $75 was still a little rich for my blood. I suspect I'll be able to make the cheaper round griddle look just as good when I'm done with it. -

I'll link you to the directions that someone linked to I believe on this forum a while back - cleaning the pan. Seasoning the pan.
I also have a bottle of Navel Jelly hidden under the kitchen sink. It's a gel form of phosphoric acid that's great for stripping rust. -
Ha! You'll have them looking great when their done.

Looking good. I noticed recently my 7qt DO(which hasnt been used in about a year) has some rust spots. Will probably lift out with boiling water though, not very deep I hope.
