...hot-smoking it to about 145 or so. Apple wood, some pecan, and part of a 75-year old maple chair from the basement of the Town Hall. Still has some varnish on it. Varnish is natural (least it was back then), I'm hoping it'll lend it some color.

gray day, just started spitting rain. flat light, iPhone pic. sorry.

    wasn't kidding.

it's very old, and mostly flaked off.

old varnish isn't the same as modern synthetics.

There ya go. You are gonna make the price of old chunks of varnished furniture going to go through the roof. Kinda like the Danelectro

Shellac is natural as well but it smells like crap when it burns. Something like burnt hair but worse. One way to ID an old coating is to burn it. I'd take the time to sand or plane off any coatings.
  • stikestike Posts: 15,597
the stuff was outside and the wood was virtually free of it...

    no worries. smelled great

At work, the owner buys clear bags. Two sizes. And that is what we put leftovers in. He is to cheap to purchase containers.

i have the big ziploc it cured in... i suppose that it won't make the surface (now smoked) wet and dewy if i let it cool before wrappin it.

think i will allow it to cool to room temp, then into the fridge overnight to chill, and then into the ziploc. that way, the heat won't make it sweat if i wrap it now.

the house smells like... well, fantastic. we're bacon-y to the gills. hahaha
