I've been using a MAPP torch for a few years and haven't had any issues other than a spider nesting in the torch causing it to burn poorly. Never could get it to work again. Had to buy another one.

But anyone in his right mind knows there is some risk in using any kind of pressurized fuel for any purpose. It's not knowing how to use it safely or what to do if it malfunctions greatly increases those risks.

Also, not knowing the treatment options is yet another problem. "Butter on a burn" is no longer the correct treatment but millions of people still use it as their immediate response.

But serious burns require serious treatment by burn specialists. Even then, there can be major complications.

Perhaps now those complications can be overcome with a new treatment which I first reported a few days back.

So if you elect to keep using your MAPP torch, or any other device that could result in burns, you need to be aware of this treatment.

I'm still using my MAPP torch but definitely more carefully. I won't be using it at eggfests though. Sure don't want to hurt anyone else.

ok, now i'm scared $hitle$$.....

i use the fatboy map gas. i have to hold the button to ignite the torch and the bottle is always upside down when i light the fuel.

from what i gather, you aren't supposed to hold them upside down? how else can it be done with the short bottle and the finger on the trigger?

there is nothing dangerous about it being upsidedown with the tank rupturing, it can happen at any angle if its already about to crack open and the tip gets jarred somehow. a simple once over on the tank looking at where the torch screws in should suffice. ive had the guts of the torch head melt out a couple times and the torch head erupt in flames, it was from severe negligence on my part leaving the torch lit and inverted in the egg on a hot bed of coals, there are rubber / plastic components in the torch head that melt if over heated, leaving your torch IN a lit egg will do that :laugh: :laugh: DONT do that that link is an ambulance chasing link, anyone burned severely by a product will win a lawsuit out of sympathy after a jury sees the burn pics. worthington makes all those propane canisters that fit the propane heaters,lanterns, stoves, torches etc that you see everywhere, the make the mapp canisters, they make the 10/20/40 pound grill tanks and much bigger stuff, they are huge and the incidence seems extremely small with web searches, i wouldnt worry much about the tank exploding, but i would look it over if i thought it fell off the table or saw someone using it as a hammer etc. chances are probably less than me winning 2 mil in the lottery

HOw long does it tak to light the coals using the torch?

Bernz-O-Matic markets a push button ignition torch connected to a five foot hose. It even comes with a little holster for fat boy tanks, which I'm sure plumbers and such wear on their belts. The holster incorporates a steel tube to insert the hot torch in to prevent burns. I hang mine on a hook under the table. Problem solved. :cheer:

I have the same one! I can't see how this one could be dangerous, aside from flying sparks from the lump...

I have this model and love it as well...

easier to bury the nozel a little and keep the sparks down....
