Yep, even with all of the warnings I still use my Mapp torch to light my BGE's. If you read my signature line you can see that I 'run with scissors' also so the Mapp torch to light the BGE fits my character. :woohoo: Just cooking a couple of little hunks of meatloaf. Mike

I think using the MAPP torch is MUCH safer than 'running with scissors'.

Just keep on 'living on the edge' ! :woohoo:
  • Whatcha got there? Mini-meatloafs?

Glad you are OK. If you keep running with scissors, I'm calling your mother!

    Pleeeeease don't tell my Mother!!!!

Yea, it was getting late so I made a couple of small ones, about 1 1/4 lbs each, to speed up the cooking time.

Jason, IMO, the info in that post is worth drawing attention to safety issue, but the pics and other info in the link is from 2006 or 2008 and is from a plaintiff attorney's website. Take it for what it's worth.

Gated Bait has a good response in that thread.

I will continue to use mine, although I will check it frequently (see my post in the thread).

I've been using a MAPP torch for a few years and haven't had any issues other than a spider nesting in the torch causing it to burn poorly. Never could get it to work again. Had to buy another one.

But anyone in his right mind knows there is some risk in using any kind of pressurized fuel for any purpose. It's not knowing how to use it safely or what to do if it malfunctions greatly increases those risks.

Also, not knowing the treatment options is yet another problem. "Butter on a burn" is no longer the correct treatment but millions of people still use it as their immediate response.

But serious burns require serious treatment by burn specialists. Even then, there can be major complications.

Perhaps now those complications can be overcome with a new treatment which I first reported a few days back.

So if you elect to keep using your MAPP torch, or any other device that could result in burns, you need to be aware of this treatment.

I'm still using my MAPP torch but definitely more carefully. I won't be using it at eggfests though. Sure don't want to hurt anyone else.

And holding it by the tank too, yikes!

By the tank and with the lock button on. :pinch: I did hold it properly, by the head and with my finger on the trigger except while taking the pic. So yes, I was living on the edge for a few seconds.

its comforting to know there are mappgas trial lawyers out there to help in a minutes notice   did you atleast check for damage at the fitting, a good way is to bang the torch head on a solid object to see if its loose after lighting

here is a currant leak to mapp gas trial lawyers

    ok, now i'm scared $hitle$$.....

i use the fatboy map gas. i have to hold the button to ignite the torch and the bottle is always upside down when i light the fuel.

from what i gather, you aren't supposed to hold them upside down? how else can it be done with the short bottle and the finger on the trigger?

WOW! Lawyers on call! I did save the link so my wife would know who to call before she called 911. ;)

I did check mine out close after reading the posts about them. Another thing I do is to remove the head from the tank after using. With the head on it seems a little top heavy so seems a little safer to remove it for storage.

there is nothing dangerous about it being upsidedown with the tank rupturing, it can happen at any angle if its already about to crack open and the tip gets jarred somehow. a simple once over on the tank looking at where the torch screws in should suffice. ive had the guts of the torch head melt out a couple times and the torch head erupt in flames, it was from severe negligence on my part leaving the torch lit and inverted in the egg on a hot bed of coals, there are rubber / plastic components in the torch head that melt if over heated, leaving your torch IN a lit egg will do that   DONT do that ;) that link is an ambulance chasing link, anyone burned severely by a product will win a lawsuit out of sympathy after a jury sees the burn pics. worthington makes all those propane canisters that fit the propane heaters, lanterns, stoves, torches etc that you see everywhere, the make the mapp canisters, they make the 10/20/40 pound grill tanks and much bigger stuff, they are huge and the incidence seems extremely small with web searches, i wouldnt worry much about the tank exploding, but i would look it over if i thought it fell off the table or saw someone using it as a hammer etc. chances are probably less than me winning 2 mil in the lottery ;)

Just my view, but the lump is lit and well lit at that, the torch can be taken out now. Doesnt need to be there for the entire cook. :-)

Most of the lump with white ash you see in the pic is used lump. I had just stirred and added a little new lump on top. It was a short 350* cook so I didn't fill.

I usually light the XL in 3 places. About 30-60 seconds to light each spot. You still have to let the VOC's burn off for several minutes, the same as any other lighting method. Really not a big time saver. Now if you want even faster you can get a weed burner. I don't have one so maybe someone that uses that method will post a picture.

Bernz-O-Matic markets a push button ignition torch connected to a five foot hose. It even comes with a little holster for fat boy tanks, which I'm sure plumbers and such wear on their belts. The holster incorporates a steel tube to insert the hot torch in to prevent burns. I hang mine on a hook under the table. Problem solved. :) :cheer:

I have the same one! I can't see how this one could be dangerous, aside from flying sparks from the lump...

Sparks have ruined a few of my shirts and made me say "ouch" a lot, so that is different from starter cubes or alcohol, but MAPP/PRO is by far my prefered method of lighting, and I never use my tank for a hammer!
