Lump racket!!

Even tough I am Canadian, I can tell you I am not verry proud of that lump chacoal brand.

In this bucket you can see some pretty good size lumps, but this was just the first tird of the bag!

Here's what's in the 2/3 left of the bag! those bits and peices sur will clog the vents hole of the fire ring and the, you can be sure to have problems getting the temp up to 600 or more. It will be more like 250

excuse my English because my Mother tongue is French!

yea i get the same thing with ozark. Ive been able to get hot cooks with smaller amounts of little pieces.

would it be better to separate the lump when I open the bag and use the bigger pieces as a bed and cover them with the bits and pieces? Would I get the same burn as using only larger lump?

I have been usine Maple Leaf regurlarly for 6 months and I have good results.

Some are "dumpers", some advocate separating and building a bed. I have built a bed on 1 low n slow, the others I have dumped, no noticable differnce, just be sure you have good air flow.

I just dump and in the case of that bag just dumped most of it in the garbage

No problem with small pieces of lump, must put some larger pieces over fire grate.

These pictures are all with small pieces of lump - no larger pieces.

The size of the pieces of lump are mostly about the size of the thumb to the first knuckle and smaller. All from previous cooks.

No problem with obtaining high temperatures.

I'm a dumper and use every bit from the bag. I have never had a problem getting high temps. I stir the old lump and make sure the grate and firebox holes are clear.

I seperate a 10 lb bag into 2 storage containers and pick out the pieces from there.
But Like GG said with a couple large pieces and little pieces I can still get very hot cooks, I normally will only fill the the wholes in the fire box if even that, its not like you need to be cooking for a long period of times at that temp

Another Canucklehead here. Even though Maple Lead is twice the price of RO at Wal-Mart I'd still buy it. Better smelling smoke, longer burn, Less ash. Can't say I've had a bag look like that though. The few I've bought were pretty evenly sized.

I have found that giving the bag a gentle massage to feel if it is full of mostly little bits is a pretty good indicator. I would also have no problem dropping a bag of dust and bits at the customer service counter and asking for a refund/another bag. Hell, I buy enough from certain places and if they don't like my business I'll take it elsewhere. Problem solved.
