How much, if any, lump do you discard?

When you get down to the bottom of a bag of lump, when there is only dust and some real small pieces left, what do you do with it? These pieces tend to gravitate toward the holes in my firegrate - though I have never had a low temp problem.
-Use them with the larger pieces from a new bag?
-Discard them?
-Any use for the dust?
Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I never really get to the bottom of the bag cuz I just dump 10lbs at a time in the large.
Easy button. -
I put in lump from a new bag and dump the dregs on top.I even burn the dust.
-
Pour everything in and burn the dust.
-
I pour in some of the new bag, then top it off with the remainder of the old bag.Large BGEMeadow Creek TS120 Stick BurnerStoker, BBQ Guru.Erie, Pa.

I use a Kingsford caddy and dump a 10# bag in that. If there is just dust I don't add it to the caddy. This keeps the water & moisture out of the lump on days like this.
You can see the two caddies here
From there I dump in the egg.

i discard ash, not lumped egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Use the dust for war paint.
-
I discard the ash in my compost heap
-
Just cleaned out the large. Saved a couple of handfuls of scraps and tossed a bunch of chips and ash. My rule is to toss it if it's smaller than a wine cork.
-
I dump in in dust and all. I do have a double storage been setup in the garage that I don't use much anymore as it is easier to dump from the bag. My kids broke a lid so I had a bin with no lid. I drilled holes in one box and put in into another box without holes in the bottom. Dump the lump into the double box and shake it around cause the dust to fall through the false bottom. I've got a couple of pounds of dust that I keep intending to make homemade briquettes with.....because I can pretty much no other reason :woohoo:
-
Do you garden? That charcoal dust is a good soil amendment. Probably more valuable than homemade briquettes.
-
We've got a small plot. I put the ash in the yard/garden/compost bin....behind the fence if I've put a lot in the compost bin and it won't rain anytime soon. Dog and kids covered in ash from throwing it in the yard make for an unhappy wife
-
The charcoal dust may bring the same reaction from the wife, but it brings a different set of nutrients to the soil than ash.

i just keep burning them, no reason to waste it. if you feel you NEED to remove the small pieces, save them for really low temp jerkey cooks, the small pieces help to sustain a very small fire when trying to hold temps at 145 dome.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
-
Do you sort out chips....what I have vary in size as the holes I made are 1/4 " or maybe a hair bigger.
-
I don't, but then I sift the compost before it goes in the garden and the stuff that goes directly into the garden gets a going over from the mini-tiller. The bigger chunks won't hurt anything, they'll just take a little longer to break down.

I pay good money for my lump .... maybe not a lot of money, but
So, I don't throw any of it away. After a long cook (12+hours), I'll remove all the lump from the LBGE and run it through a sifter (it's actually an office/desk trash can made from mesh) to remove all the ash dust from the lump. This process sometimes results in lump smaller than a young pea being discarded, but by and large all that lump gets recycled on the next cook. I have a large bin (holds 40 pounds of lump at a time) that is slowly collecting real dust - don't yet know what I'm going to do with that - maybe the wife's flowers? -
The small pieces go into the garbage, don't want to clog the grate so I don't mess with the little stuff.
-
All the flavor is in the dust... burn it.
-
When I near the bottom of a sack I just dump it into another bag. Then once or twice a year I empty that consolidated bag out into this sifting tray I made using 1/2" hardware cloth. It eliminates the dust and the really tiny pieces. Works for me!
Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
I dump almost nothing.. I use the small preburnt lump pieces to put on the top of a fresh load, It starts easier and doesn't spark as much when I use my bernzomatic Propylene starter....
