Bad Gasket?

The pics don't really show it well, but there's quite a bit of smoke coming out from between the upper and lower sections where my gasket seems to be burnt down to almost nothing. Is this normal to have lots of smoke "leak" out from between the upper and lower section, or do I need to replace my gasket

i have no smoke leaking between the two, like flapoolman says i think your bands need to be adjusted but your gasket might be shot as well if your indicating that a part is all burnt up.

More than likely, you need an adjustment to the bands to get them aligned. Hard to tell from those pics if the gasket is gone or not. Try the alignment first and you might find that you won't need a gasket.

I'll adjust the bands first.... I can loosen and tighten them, but is the position important? If so, where should they be? Right up under the ridge on the upper and lower?

Just use a dollar bill to make sure it is tough to pull out all the way around.

The proper position would be tight against the bottom side of the dome ring, and as far down on the base as you can get. Might need some extra help or weight to hold the dome down while tightening the bolts. A clamp or an extra set of hands works. Start with the top band and reseat it. Once tight check the gap with a dollar bill or other similar shaped piece of paper. You should feel a little resistance when trying to pull the bill out. Check this all the way around the gasket. If still a little loose, adjust the bottom band.

I agree with adjusting the bands. I also think you might as well take off original gasket and go with Rutland gasket on bottom only. I'll never go back to the egg gasket.
