I'm thinking i want to try to make something for dinner in the DO. I want to try taking a box of rice, mix, and put in the bottom of a DO. then taking some thighs and wings (i have 3 leg quarters in fridge) and layering on top. Maybe throw in some chopped onions and mushrooms. Baked uncovered in egg @ 350 for 45 mins or so.
I'm sure this or something similar has been done before. What do you think, would it turn out ok? maybe sear the chicken in the bottom of DO first?

I'm no DO expert but it might work. 45 minutes uncovered might warm up your chicken. Might take another hour to cook it.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas

HP,
I'm definitely no expert- but you might considering using some kind of rack to raise the thighs above the DO. Maybe just a small grid or a roasting rack laid across the DO. This way, you will still get the chicken drippings in the rice/veggies, but the chick won't get all "steamy" (if that makes any sense! )Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
Were you planning on cooking the rice first or having it cook in the DO? Also, are you going to add some liquid? Maybe I am not understanding and that's what you meant by mix?

that could work, but you'd need some liquid for the rice if it's uncooked. I don't know how well the rice will cook if not covered. browning the chicken 1st would some flava
I think you'd need more time as well.context is important -
ahh. you think the chicken might be more "steamed" sort of cooking in the DO? Good point. Hmm. i'll have to think about it. I was going to cook this on my small. I don't think the chicken will fit on top of the DO. But i do like the idea. thanks. might try it on my large.

griffin,
i was basically going to mix the rice per the package instructions in the DO. Then lay the chicken in the mixture and bake the whole thing. the idea is to cook the rice and chicken at same time in DO. or something like that anyway. -
yeah, i think your right. i think i should brown the chicken first. I would use box rice, and make it per the package directions. It would just be cooking in the DO instead of stove top. who knows, i might try it...

yeah, i think you might be right. but i think i will try to brown the chicken in the bottom of the DO before i make the rice... we'll see how it goes.

If you brown the chicken in the DO first, pull it and then add your rice mix putting your chicken on top....sounds good.(should also add some great flavor to the rice) Let us know how it works and snap a few photos.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas
