1st loney...too salty

I thought I would give my first loney a try. I asked my wife to pick some up while she was out. She got 2 lbs at the deli at Wally world. The label read "PD Beef Bologna". One odd thing is they said they could only slice it in 1 inch slices. I guess they only have a slicer...nobody has a darn knife to cut off a chunk o' loney.
I rubbed with mustard and a generic BBQ rub (Kroger brand grill time rub). I used a fair amount of hickory (3 smaller chunks equivalent to one fist size) and smoked it for about 1.5 hours.
I chopped it and served on buns with condiments of choice. I used some BBQ sauce. It was good, but it was far too salty. It also didn't really soak up much smoke flavor, or if it did the flavor was overpowered by the saltiness. Part of the problem might be that it was 3 pieces instead of 1, so it didn't stay in the smoker as long. However, I wouldn't use this particular brand if I ever try it again.
So, I ask the loney experts- is there a particular brand that is preferred for a chub?

Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Quickly now. E-mail me your address and we will get our literature and the help line number to you. This is not a path you want to take son! It is proven that loney destroys brain cells and leads to visions of royal courts and other fantasies.

You hafta go pretty light with the rub on slices.I have better luck smokin the 2 lb. chubs, then slicing and throwing on the grill just long enough to brown em up and get some grill marks.'Loney is salty by nature. Hope you give it another try.
