Im about to do 5 pork shoulders...
Ive done with and without the platesetter in the past.
Whats the general consensus?
I usually dont use it, but im a little worried about the drip since im doing 5 at once.

When I do pulled pork, I use a drip pan to catch all the grease. The plate setter goes in legs up with the drip pan on it. The grid goes on the plate setter legs and the butt goes on the grid. I used this same setup the time I did 4 butts, with 2 butts on the grid and 2 butts on the grid extender. Good luck! The Naked Whiz

I agree with TNW, you are definitely going to want a drip pan in there to catch the grease. 5 butts will make a helluva mess without one.

Have never done one direct or seen a recipe for direct.
So I'm with the Whiz on this one. Indrect.
Good Luck no matter whcih way you do them.

In direct and drip pan. Post pic's we will be curious how you did it. Tim

my setup is just a pizza stone and a drip pan, gives you more room to stack all the meat when doing a big cookfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

heres one direct, with five the grease would probably put the fire out

fishlessman,
do you normally do your butts direct or was that a one time thing? -
couple times this way, its not the routine but the end product is similar, maybe even more bark if your not basting. indirect at a higher temp is easier for someone not ready for lower temp control and its just as good. ribs i almost always cook direct this wayfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I did 2 last night indirect with the plate setter. 18lbs and 15 hrs later. No pics, so I am not sure if it really happened or my dog is just plain nuts. She keeps trying to lick the egg and jump on the counter....
