Wood ash concern
Options
Egg Master 3000
Posts: 323
I have a concern about the fuel I am using in my large egg. The wood pops a lot and likes to leave a dusting of ash on my grill grate. The last two cooks I have done I had my egg at 350 for around an hour. The first time it wasn't so bad but tonight it was a challenge keeping the grate clean.
I fill up the egg about 1" below the fire ring (as instructed by the distributor). I rake the coals around to remove the ash before I start cooking, but I leave the small pieces in there with some new lump.
Is there something I could be doing differently or do I have bad lump? It is 100% hardwood but it is much cheaper than the coal I see people posting on here

I get Frontier at Ace hardware and don't seem to have any of the problems you are describing.
On the other hand when using kamado extruded coconut I have white ash on everything, so now I just use a few pieces each cook to use it up.. it lasts forever but leaves a white ashy residue, food. egg everything. -
The Frontier from Sam's is from Mexico I think, or at least it is here in PC Fl.George Foreman? Who?Tim C. Panama City, Fl.Large, Minimax-soon

The Frontier I reviewed is different than what Sam's has, as far as I know. The Naked Whiz

the Ace frontier is good, but i believe there are acouple 'frontiers' out there, whether the same company or not.
anything i have had that popped and gave off ash has been sourced from south america, like south american royal Oak. -
Some brands do that. It is probably nothing you are doing. Try some different brands. Good luck! The Naked Whiz

Ratz.... 40 lb. bag... although I have burned about half already. There is also south american RO? I will have to keep an eye open for that too

If you check out my web site, you will see that there are 3 (I think, I have to check, LOL!) South American Royal Oaks, and my experience with them was good to bad.The Naked Whiz

Forget South American RO is blows literally! It blows ash all over! Only get USA Royal Oak.
