What are fire bricks and where do I get them?

Jimbo,
Go to your local fireplace type joint and ask them. The bricks themselves are a tan color (mine are anyways) and are cheap.[p]Hope that helps,
Matt.

Jimbo,
Firebricks are special bricks made of refractory material to withstand high temperatures. When new, firebricks are tan colored and have a smooth glaze. You will immediately recognize them as the lining in fireplaces. Full bricks are approximately 8 inches by 4 by 2 1/4 inches. "Splits" have the same approximate height and width but are half as thick. In practice, the height and width is less than 4 by 8 to allow for mortar joints. Bricks are easy to split with an inexpensive brick chisel: Score a line and the brick will break (usually) along the line.[p]Firebricks cost less than a dollar each. I bought mine at a brick yard but a mason or a Home Depot-type store may sell you a few. It is useful to buy a few full size firebricks and a few splits. Score them into several, even pieces with straight edges and use them as needed. [p]I think most Egg owners use firebricks to raise their cooking grid and/or to add more mass for more even heat. Others on the forum are more experienced cooks than I am and can tell you how they use firebricks in the Egg. I do not know if you can use regular bricks in place of firebricks.
