Had a chance to do some beer brats not long ago. First off, started them direct for around 10 minutes at 325:
While that was going on, got an onion chopped and working in some EVOO:
Added a couple beers, followed by the brats for a 30 minute simmer:
Of course, always have to do a few hotdogs for the complainers:

 someone complained about brats? Especially those beer brats! I don't understand.

I decided to do some beer brats the other day so sent wife to store to buy some. She came home with some Johnsonville brats and, well, you guessed it--precooked. There went my good idea. Just drank the beer and ate precooked non beer brats. I wanted to cook them in beer and then grill myself.
They were OK but I wanted them simmered in beer and onions myself. -
If you want to kick it up a notch add a 1/4 lb of unsalted butter to the beer and onions. Keep it simmering and return the brats to the mix after cooking to keep them warm until served. Adds a nice flavor to them!
