Grate: Which Side Goes Up?

My grate is installed with the small side of the holes facing up.
Posts and pictures on this forum leave me unsure of the correct position for the grate holes.
Do the large or small side of the holes face upwards? Does it matter which side is up and if so, why?
Regards,
dbCooper

db,
It was installed correctly. Small holes up--this helps ensure the small bits of lump fall through and don't block the airflow.Larry

The edge should be beveled. That bevel should fit against the edge of the firebox. The wider surface of the grate is the top, the more narrow surface is the bottom.
