Suppose a guy finished a long cook and wanted to continue cooking but needed to add lump. Can he add lump on top of the live fire lump or does he have to clean it out, load new lump and place the live coals on top?

Yep,just dump the new stuff on top.

It's also a great way to choke down a hot fire.
I've snoozed on my fare share of startups to walk out and see 900 on the therm. :P -
Thanks for the info. Just wanted to know.

That's great news. This makes it easy peasy as they say.

If you fill it to the top of the fire ring,it's gonna be a LONG time before you need more lump. You can relight and use the leftover lump on the next cook,so it is'nt wasteful.

Yep, I know that. I have a special reason for asking. not at liberty to explain more. just yet.

Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies!

No reason why you can't add new lump on top. You might need to give the current lump a stir before adding the new lump. Also, the new lump is going to smoke quite a bit until you get the new fire stabilized, so depending on your love of smoke (or not) you might also want to proceed like you were starting a new fire and wait for the smoke to clear. The Naked Whiz

I just did this on Sunday. I had very little lump left so I added just a bit more to last another hour or so. I stirred in the new with the old waited a few minutes and she was good to go.

stir ash, dump lump, stir to comingle, wait for temps and cleaner smoke (new batch of VOCs and dust has just been added)

NW- Thanks. I am glad I can just stir and reload. The time to wait for clean smoke is fine as long I don't have to be moving hot coals around.

Jasper, I am glad I am not the only one to think of this. thanks.

Stike, this sounds easy. I know I was just making it too hard in my head. I was trying to figure how fire starts in the top and burns down and then adding lump it would burn up from the bottom and about that time I knew I needed to ask the question. The fact is the fire is really controlled by the draft not so much the amount of fuel. Thanks for the info.
