Dazed & Confused??? HELP !

OK, mostly just confused.
I am showing major differences in temp between my dome thermo and my maverick.
Put on a 9# picnic last night.
Went to bed with maverick reading 225 and dome reading around 270. So far so good.
Checked Maverick during night and it was holding around 240. Went to check the egg around 6am and maverick said 240 and dome read 350+?????
Adjusted vents and temp began to drop, back to sleep.
Maverick alarm went off when temp hit 199, checked dome and it was 275. Maverick continued to drop to 185 dome read 250.
Took everything off and fire was almost completely out. Stirred lump and got it going again.
Now MAverick says 240 and dome says 340 :S
What is going on here????
Only thing I can think as that the Maverick probe is shielded by the plate setter and dome prob isn't
Any help would be great

florida Nick.,
Methinks you need to calibrate your dome thermo.

Have you calibrated the dome thermo? If not that may explain the major difference cause there should not be that much difference. I'm assuming you have the maverick clipped to the grate and it's not touching the meat.
-
Am I the only one that puts the temp probe from the Maverick, through the dome therm hole?
Then when it's 30 below, you won't need to leave the fireplace. Course it's gonna be 55 again here today, so I'm not quite sure what the heck is goin on with winter. -
Steven and Firetruck,
I should have mentioned that I have calibrated the dome thermo and checked the maverick with boiling water.
And yes the maverick probe is cliped to the grate not touching anything. Also the maverick prob is near the front, can't be more than 6 inches or so from the dome prob.
Hmmmmmm, any other thoughts???
Not really worried about the picnic as I'm sure it will come out fine either way. Just want to understand what is going on here. -
It's still autumn (gee, that's a fancy word; usually just say Fall
 guess I didn't want to confuse anyone -
what's the temp coming out the top vent??
-
I have been wanting to ask if anyone has ever stuck their maverick probe in their dome hole......
Just thought that might be too much of a personal question
Seriously though with this much difference in temp I dont know what to trust??? -
Gits in where it fits in
-
Kari,
Speaking of "Fall"....remember Molly in the parking lot?.....
That shiz is gonna happen in the snow too. :woohoo: -
I'll have to check.
Is that more of a "true" reading??
At this point I'm afraid the temp at the top vent is going to be 450!! -
I was gonna say 500* :P
Whatcha smokin? -
I can't imagine this being the case but maybe clip to another place near the back. Possibly a cold spot. Or clip it to the dome probe. If there is a difference then something could have happened to the maverick. Leads plugged in all the way?
-
It's more of an approximation of the dome temp; should be close to what the dome thermometer reads...
-
 your dome thermometer is touching or into the meat
-
Nick you might want a probe holder it well fit in your grate

Maverick = 250
Dome = 320
Top vent = 260 (checked with dome thermo)
Getting closer to a normal difference. Still confused about all the fluctuation between the dome and Mav throughout the cook.
But hey at least my picnic temp is on the rise again. It was at 170 when I first noticed the major difference of 240 maverick and 350 dome.
Picnic dropped down to 156 and now its back up to 163.
Too many numbers! My brain hurts :pinch:  -
Cool thanks Ross!

glad you are feeling more comfortable with the cook -
Mr. Nick,
I will try to put the platesetter leg aligned with the dome probe. Another words when you lift the dome the platesetter leg is close to your belly.
Then I will route the maverick probe cables across the base gasket and across the platesetter leg that is closest to the maverick so as not to have anything in direct line of the indirect heat that may be interfearing... just my 2 cents worth. Tim -
Thanks Tim,
I was actually thinking I should do that to sort of even the playing field between the dome and grate temps. -
Shhhh, may be old man winter forgot about us.
