I think that there may be items of interest to the general Forum population that might not be viewed if they are strictly relegated to the OT Forum.
I certainly don't do this out of disrespect, so please don't get me wrong. I absolutely think that there are certain things like ex-wives, medical diagnosis, etc, that don't belong here. However, I wonder how many relevant OT's might be interesting to people if they were available for them to see. Again, I understand completely your attempts to make everyone happy, so I hope I'm not upsetting the apple cart.
Like today....I was looking for a camera monopod to take on my New Mexico camping trip, so that I could take pics predominantly to show to fellow Eggers. At any rate, I came upon a post from a lady who made her own camera monopod from a walking stick. I thought that was a great idea, so I tweeked it a bit, and it came out great. It was something I thought other Eggers might find interesting.
However, I had never posted to the OT Forum, and a quick glance told me the traffic was a tad light....maybe 4 - 10 posts in a week. Again, don't get me wrong,....this is not an earth shattering concept, but I thought it might be interesting to some. Most Eggers would likely never have gotten it on the OT Forum, so I'm posting it here.
Like I said ....slap my hands if necessary, but here is an OT.......I apologize in advance.
The OT
It started with an old Sotol walking stick purchased in Big Bend about a dozen years ago that was just rotting in the garage. I saw the lady's post, and was intrigued. I went to Home Depot and bought a swivel shower head which I modified with some cutting, epoxy, and a 1/4 inch bolt. It fit the camera base perfectly, and allows for 360 degree rotation. An $8 investment....all but 25 cents was for the shower head. The lady had just mounted a bolt rigid in the handle, but I thought the swivel gave a bit more flexibility.
Now, I can use my walking stick, and when necessary, attach the camera to steady my senior citizen shakiness when trying to capture a picture.
I'm sure that some folks will, and some folks won't find this interesting. Life is like a bag of lump charcoal....you never know what your going to get.

Great idea Mike
BTW did that stick say poolman on it? :P -
Needless to say that is sooooo cool!
Oh and BTW disregard my recent post. -
Don't do it man...these people don't sleep much. They only want to cook, eat and have fun. Can you imagine?
But they will be good for a quality beer and a killer meal. :P -
Brilliant photo/hiking tool!
-
Now, if you add a "Bud Holder" on the stick, it would be perfect. Great idea!!

Where in New Mexico are you going? Anywhere near Santa Fe, you gotta hit Bobcat Bite for a green chili cheeseburger! Probably one of the best burgers I've ever had!

Not only is the traffic a tad light, the last time I looked when things fell off the page it's gone forever.
Glad you posted over here, neat idea and cool dual purpose.
Thanks for the post over here.
Did you make two monopods? It seems you lost the "senior citizen shakiness" when taking pictures of the end result.
Crystal clear pictures.

Vary nice Mike, I'm sure it well help

All is full speed ahead. Mom and Baby daughter are fine. Due date in late December. Everything looks good. Thanks for asking.

"senior citizen shakiness"
GG, I like that, will use it at the pub for when I spill the first beer. :woohoo:
Cheers,

To me the forum is a big disfunctional family. I pesonally hate the OT section idea. Most folks, me included, don't have time to spend all day on the net. I have only looked at the OT section 1x. If its on the main forum and the OT heading peaks my interest as yours did I open it nd if not: see ya. I realize what WPB is trying to do and all the work for the forum is SOOO appreciated. Just one "middle" timers observaion AND I love the stick! Does it include a cane sward and blow gun as well!? :P
-
This was interesting and I would have never seen it in the OT posts.
FWIW, you could buy one of those acorn type nuts to make the top a little smoother and protect your threads. -
Good point! Thanks.
-
Good Lord, Mike!! Is that a left handed or right handed walking stick?? :woohoo: How did you take a pic of your camera??
-
You will be amazed how well your "monopod" will assist you in your zoomed and low light photos. If propped against a rock/tree/fencepost it can be every bit as good as a tripod.
-
nice idea.
couple thoughts.....
when the preface/apology is longer and more involved than the actual content, i think you qualify for the "tripping over one's self award". hahaha
the other: maybe get a little plastic cap to crew on that exposed threaded bit so that you don't put it through your forehead if you stumble and trip. seriously. small chance, but just probably a good idea. would also give you a chance to swap out different caps based on your personal mood and/or style
heh heh heh
as for the OT forum.... that thing is dying a natural death. darwin's theory, natural selection, and all that, in action. -

 I think the same can be said for siglines. If your sigline is longer than most of your posts you might need a shoter sigline. -
LR, first a high dollar backyard, second smoking them thin seegars, now this, what's next a pony tail from under that hat...........LOL.
He is slowly coming over to the Chubby dark side........double LOL.

Would love to, Dear. However I've got to take the Lubbock to Amarillo route both going and returning. Rain check, please.
