Our son was given this cooker. It says "Big Green Egg" on the metal daisy wheel, which does not swing open like the DFMT. Is this one of the clay Eggs that's been discussed here?

The DFMT is an upgrade that came out in the late 90s and it does not date this Egg. I don't think this is a BGE, but it does have some BGE parts though. And yes, it is clay.

I think it is. My first one was exactly that color with exactly that handle, bought from BGE in Atlanta.

One thing with those Eggs is that you shouldn't high fire them too much. BGE switched to the high-fire ceramic composition in the late 90's, but prior to that the ceramic could go brittle if exposed to very high fires. And brittle - fragile.

You'll also find that all the internal parts of the new Eggs will fit, just measure first and advise whether it is a large or medium.

Thanks! It's good to know that the internal dimensions are the same as the new Eggs because he's thinking about accessories for indirect cooks.
