You don't need a guru.
You do need an Egg though!
It's a lot of fun. As someone else previously said, I never enjoyed cooking so much before I got the Egg! I often cook food just for the leftovers!
I just did an overnight on Friday- 8lb Picnic shoulder. Put it on at 6:00pm and took it off at 9:00 am. Ate it at noon. (except for the leftovers) I don't do too many overnight cooks maybe 4 or 5 a year? I can't see getting a guru for any other kind of cook and as I said, you don't need it. But if you do overnight cooks regularly, I would think it would be big help.
