I believe the Chiminea is used as an outdoor fireplace and is not used for cooking...others can chime in...

a cut and paste from BGE website (below), but thanks for trying to answer my question
Chiminea
The Big Green Egg Chiminea offers the warmth and ambiance of an outdoor heater with our same ceramic technology, making it a great addition to your deck or patio. It withstands rain even when hot, burns wood or charcoal, has a screened front to prevent the escape of stray sparks and can be used as a portable barbecue grill with the addition of an optional cooking grid. Since it does double duty for heating and cooking, it is practical for camping and tailgating. The low tripod stand is optional. -
My bad....

Good question. On the BGE site they show a nest but nothing else.In the five years that I have been on the forum I have never seen any comments about cooking on the Chiminea. My two cents worth would be if you want some warmth on the patio or deck go for it if not buy the mini to do a small cook or whatever and you will have a a heck of a lot more fun cooking on the mini as opposed to the Chiminea.Perhaps Bob from BGE might chime in.

i dont have one, but i think it would be the same as cooking on an egg dome open without the ability to control temps.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

no problem

without a lid, I was wondering how good the cooking would be. Yes, I was thinking of getting one to put on my patio. Then use it as a travel grill.
-
yes it can be used as a grill, but it's primary purpose is to provide a source of heat..
A BGE can be used for heat, but it's primary purpose is to Cook..
Yes you can throw a dying person into an SUV and get them to the hospital, but an Ambulance will work better.. -
CW hit the nail.. i have a large a mini and a chimnea.. you can burn a burger or some dogs but your cooking on wood not lump , no heat control etc... best left for roasting marshmallows imho. the mini is more portable and much better suited to cooking away from home,, i took my mini to new years eve at a friends and grilled shrimp asparagus steak etc in his driveway, shut it down and went home [freezing cold out so no problem with a hot egg in a car] no way easy way to shut down a chimnea
i think you deserve both. i know i did  -
I always thought it was for heat myself. That's why I love this forum. Learn something new every day.

was the 3rd pic from Halloween :woohoo:

The 3rd pic definitely is in AFTERBURNER mode. Your Hot Dogs would cook in about .001 seconds. This is the greatest signature EVAR!
-
You are one of the first people to notice that. Completly acidental. The white spot in background was the full moon raising threw the timber. Was the first fire in it. Guess its possesed!!
-
In the 3rd pic, I see someone that didn't buy an egg and is now paying for it in the "hot place"!
