Cleaning Daisy Wheel Grease/Gunk, Help Please

I'm cleaning up the egg to get ready for Christmas cooking, inside and out. So far, I've placed a broken metal fire grate, shop-vacced the egg, and discovered multiple cracks in the firebox. I used to perform this cleanup about once a year, but haven't done it in many years since the kids started arriving.
Now I have nearly a decade of build-up on my daisy wheel top. Any advice on getting rid of the gunk?
Thanks!

Next time you do a high cleaning burn (600 degrees), put the daisy wheel inside. Presto... chango... clean.

Burn it off  I always place the daisy wheel in the egg after each cook to keep it clean. The heat will burn the crud off.If you have a weedburner, you can just blast it with that,if you don't,you should really get one(they're fun) :woohoo:

Also, with the weedburner, you only need to light your lump in one place

A little over kill but they ARE fun and better than all the other methods of lighting lump!

One thing I've noticed about this site, a lot of folks have a morbid preoccupation with raging infernos. No wonder all those posts about blown gaskets.

The weedburner has nothing to do with my one,yes one bad(5yr old)gasket.I have four eggs, and have yet to replace a gasket(my medium could use one though). My gasket crapped before I got the weedburner though :pinch: I think that this was the cause BTW,the recent gasket problems are caused by bad adhesive, not bad gaskets

Thanks for the replies, guys. Not really sure why I didn't think of that on my own. I was thinking the soaking in something route followed by a scrubbing.
