For some time now I have been wanting to grind my own meats and learn to make and stuff my own sausage.
In doing some research I find there is all types of grinders and stuffers just waiting for someone to buy. Most cost more than I can afford or I'm willing to pay for something that may be just a fad.
Confusion about which one would work best for me has left me with lots of questions.
I only will be making a limited amount of hamburger and sausage for our own use.
I already have 575 watt Professional 600 Kitchen Aid Mixer.
Does anyone have the food grinder and sausage stuffer accessories for the KA mixer
and if so, will it do a decent job for me
Thanks,
Doug

It's a fine grinder but a lousy stuffer. I would recommend a vertical stuffer in a 5 lb size. -RP

its good enough for up to 10/15 pounds of meat at one time, more than that i would look at other options. the only thing i dont like is that i want a grinding plate with larger holes for some of the portuguese style sausages, the two sizes that come with the kit are to small for what i want to do, but for the average italian or pork sausage or burger its fine.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Go back to yesterdays postings. I posed the same questions and there were quite a rew responses. I think Santa is going to gift me with a meat grinder for my 350 watt KA. Good luck with your new toys!

I have both and it is a good grinder. The stuffer works but it is not as good as the cylinder stuffers.

can someone elaborate on why the KA stuffer is sub par? it seems to be a unanimous comment. wondering what the shortcomings are and what stuffer would be better for relatively small batches.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

I don't have a problem with mine. As Alton Brown says put it on low, but not too low to warm up the meat.
I find a setting around 4 works well. -
its kinda slow and definately a two person job to get any speed out of it, for small batches its fine however and i usually leave half the sausage bulk anyways so its really no problem.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

LC has the same KA unit. I bought her the meat grinding attachment and it did not perform up to our expectations. I wnet out and bought her a LEM from Bas Pro Shop. Works GREAT! They are pricey but well worth it. copy and paste this: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_40794____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=TOP_selectitems#itemDetailSEE YOU IN FLORIDA, March 14th and 15th 2014 http://www.sunshinestateeggfest.com You must master temp, smoke, and time to achive moisture, taste, and texture! Agree 100%. The KA is good if you are doing bulk grinds and no more then 7 lbs at a time.
Stuffing is hard because you can't get a good ampunt of meat into the feed. It is made so Bobby or Jill won't lose any fingers making hamburger.

cool. found a kitchen aid video on line that said to use that same setting. thanks
sounds like both the grinder and stuffer are only ok for small batches on the less-powerful machinesed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
I'm still confused :ermm:
Could you please post a link to the KA video
Thanks -

i want to grind my own also but i am waiting on a email from someone i am still waiting :(
but if you have the KA get the pasta rollers and cutter the plastic one does not seem as durable as the metal one.. i have the 575w 6 qt KA and would not trade it for anything
happy eggin

The KA grinding attachment is fine, an excellent value. You can grind 1 pound per minute all day long. I bought the $30 attachment years ago (they are now $50) after watching two of my buddies grind two deer one afternoon for hamburger. Not venison scraps, two deer.
The KA stuffing attachment is limp. For stuffing, casings and especially the one pound plastic bags which you will use for bulk sausage and burger, there are plenty good options out there both vertical and horizontal.
Once you use a dedicated stuffer you will know what you have been missing. I have a 5 pound barrel model from The Sausage Stuffer, it's at least 20 years old, with a stainless barrel and cast frame and gears. There are now some nice ones out there from Cabela's and also LEM. If you are into older classic models, search out Empire brand. Many of my friends have them and refuse to give them up. Plenty of parts support too.
EDIT: It's Enterprise, not Empire.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery
