I'm looking for a good, but somewhat cheap lump charcoal to use. Any suggestions out there?

  • Good and Cheap......HMMM....... Probably Cowboy brand from Lowe's or American made Royal Oak from Walmart.

Here are a few more choices.

    Thanks for the link
  • good and cheap? i dont think those 2 words can go together
  • American RO from wal mart is the best deal I can find. I like it better than the Cowboy, and the Cowboy cost more for a smaller bag.
  • That's weird, Cowboy is cheaper here.
  • i started out using big green egg charcoal. since that time, i have switch to kingsford lump and it has worked good for me
  • "The taste of cheap charcoal is remembered long after the price when that 15 buck eye of round is still left over in the frig!!lol" I use Ozark Oak myself but may not be avalable where you are. Make sure it all looks like chunks of tree not chunks of someone's kitchen cabnets. Walmart keeps Royal Oak lump which isn't bad.

Rather than drive all over, I get the house brand from Whole Foods... It's made in Canada, and I have been quite pleased.

  • Royal Oak and Cowboy seem to be pretty good and inexpensive. I would avoid Kingsford. I just dumped a bag of it in the garbage after it made my chicken and pork taste like used motor oil. The Big Green Egg brand is also good but a little more expensive and I find small rocks in it from time to time.
