I bought my BGE in the early 80s in Orlando. Belive it or not I still have the ceramic fire grate in perfect condition. I upgrated the old steel draft door to a SS one. I now have a very small gap along the top ridge. I was thinking about putting some heat resitant silicone compound by worry about tainting the food. Anyone have a similar problem? And yes it has been quite problem controling the temp.

Sounds like the thing to do.

just read your question again. I don't think either would would 'taint the food'.
At that point the air going in the egg is at ambient temp. and below low lump level.
As for setting up the q2, that's piece of cake. Insert your adapter, plug in the fan and plug into the q2. Adjust your settings and cook.
Even if you have a small leak it shouldn't affect your cook much if at all.

silicon has a nasty smell and since the o2 flows thru the draft door the smell should follow...

The silicone has an odor when curing but when dry it is odorless.
Once dry there "shouldn't" be an issue.
BGE will know.
