are you looking to fabricate one or buy a cast iron floor drain cover?Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I have some heavy gauge expanded metal I will use, my guess is to cut a diameter larger than the original, because after a few high heat cooks it will bend down into a bowl shape. Any thoughts?

Even heavy duty expanded will warp on you, but yes it's best to cut it larger so there is a better chance that it will stay in place when you stir the coals...I'm speaking from experience!
Here's my grate:
This is 7.75" diameter made of 3/16" plate steel
Then the legs are 3" long of 3/8 steel rod so that it actually sets on the base of the egg and doesn't rock.
Note how it sets flush in the fire box.
Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
