Racer,
I have a large, and I am a newbie as well, so take this for what is worth.
First.......how much lump did you use? Make sure it is filled to the top of the Fire Box
Second.........Make sure that the holes in your fire box are clear so it can breath.

How hot are you trying to go?
525 is pretty decent for a small.
I use a small hand held fan when I want/need higher temps.

Besides the amount of lump issue have you calibrated your thermometer? Are the holes in your grate clogged? Is the bottom of your firebox properly lined up with the vent and not offset?
I happen to be one who can get to 775 in my small when I want, but it's not that uncommon to read here that some people simply can not PERIOD.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
i will try the line up thing
hmm will have to guess
thanks for the tips

If you open the lower vent you should be able to stick your ash tool all the way in and touch the other side. If how ever you cannot rake out any ashes your firebox needs alignment.

I've tried to talk someone through on the vent line up before and I should have taken a picture, but haven't. Basically it's a matter of holding your eye steady say about 1 foot from the open vent while looking on past at the opening at the bottom of your fire box. Essentially you want the outer vent opening to evenly "frame" the inner fire box opening. If it isn't just tweak until it does. I know this may sound silly, but you'd be surprised how much a non-aligned vent and opening can mess up a max temperature capability. Good luck!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
