We bought a cast iron grate for the small at Waldorf. There isn't a speck of rust on it, which suggests to me that it's been treated with oil or some other preservative. My thought is to give it a good scrub with soap and hot water, let it dry, wipe it with Crisco, and put it in the egg at 350 or so until it stops smoking.
Any thoughts?

washing it is fine - the first time - but as for seasoning it like a cast iron Dutch oven - forget it as the first time it gets hot any oil coating will burn off! After repeated uses it builds up it's own protective coating.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Do not use soap. If washing cast iron, use hot water only and dry right away to avoid rusting. I usually rub my cast iron with a bit of oil right after drying to prevent rusting.
