My thermometer reads 300 at the high point, but it must be 600 degrees in the egg. Any suggestions?

I assume you have tried adjusting it by turning the little nut on the back while holding the face still. This will turn the needle to the correct temp. Use boiling water and adjust as close to 212 (or whatever your local boiling temperature is) as you can.

Other than that, buy a new one.

I recently broke mine and purchased one from tel-tru that reads to 1000 degree with a 5 inch stem for 19 dollars plus 6 dollars for shipping.
