I'm not a big fan of charred steaks. Not saying I don't do it often enough
That last picture is steak nirvana for me. -

D, Not sure where you stand on what I did with these steaks.
I'm not a T-Rex'er. I prefer to do them more like the BGE CD recommends. In this case, with 1.5" thick ribeyes, I seared them at 650 degrees each side for 2 minutes, then flipped them, shut the vents, and left them in the BGE for another ~3.5 minutes.
They turned out nicely, we thought. -
I tend to cook steaks in the 450-600 range.
Whenever I go for nuclear sear I get charred steak.
So I do more or less what your doing.
