Broken bottom grate ?

I see a crack starting to work its way across. I have access to a plasma cutter. Has anyone tried cutting heavy guage expanded steel at the correct diameter as a replacement? I am a little concerned about there being so much more open area and it allowing the ash to fall too easily in larger pieces. Maybe cutting 2 pieces and rotating one 90 degrees would help. Is this similar to a turbo grate I've seen in subject lines before?

Once it is too bad to continue use, go to a hardware store and get a drain cover to replace it.

I do not think you will have any luck at all trying to find a suitable grate to replace the grate at any hardware store.I called about twenty hardware and plumbing supply houses in the Baltimore and had no luck at all. What you will find is not thick enough to withstand the temperatures. It is covered under warranty from the mother ship or you can check with your dealer for a replacement. You will sped more than the 15.00 to $18.00 for a new one outright than wast all of your time plus the gas money running around to all of the hardware stores trying to explain what it is you are looking for.Trust me--BEEN THERE DONE THAT.

Mine cracked too. I was at my dealer yeaterday and he replaced it. No charge. He just asked if I would bring the old one by sometime (he did not know if they would want it back)
