Need help with a Goetta recipe

I have a recipe for Goetta that didn't turn out on the first try; it was to runny almost like soup. It should have been thick, so that when it cools it is solid. The recipe called for "Steel Cut" Oats but I couldn't find any so I used Quaker Oats. Does anyone know the difference and would this have caused my problem? I want to try another batch with "Steel Cut" Oats and am wondering if I need to make other adjustments as well.

Many Thanks,
RustyEgg

Look for something labeled as Irish Oatmeal if you can't find steel cut oats. They are pretty much the same thing.

Regular quaker oats (rolled oats) are more processed and much thinner when prepared than steel cut or Irish oatmeal. Steel cut oats are true whole grain.

Irish Oatmeal is thicker and has a different flavor.
  • Bob's Red Mill has steel cut oats. They are the old fashioned boil for 15-20 minutes variety. We won't make any other kind since they taste so good!

Silver Palate also makes steel cut oats. They can be found in most grocery stores I believe.
  • That stuff is the best...I just moved to Florida (Tampa) from Cincinnati and can't find it anywhere. Rather than pay to have it shipped I thought I'd try my hand at making some myself.

If anyone is in Cincy...you have to try the Glier's Goetta.
