ash tool handle

mr.b ,
The ash tool has the spring configuration so it acts as a handle. The swirl part above the handle was used to close to top vent of older lids without a daisy wheel.

mr.b ,[p] Springs have long been great for dissipation of heat and it makes for a comfortable handle. My bigger dutch ovens have them. The hook was used to latch and unlatch the old style hinges. They used to lock in place. [p] BGE never changed the overall design.

Celtic Wolf,
excellent, i new there was some logical explanation. thank you.

mr.b , I use the hook loop portion to lift my cast iron grid, the same way you would use the other end to lift the porcelean grid. Its a lot stronger.[p]

mr.b ,
This is a 100 year old+ design. It was origally used in tools for wood stove tools for lifting plates and grates. It works because it disipates heat.
