MM- What type of wood do you use for the plank and do you add wood chunks to the lump? Thx, Rick

Ironbaugh,
i used cedar planks (the kind you buy at the cooking stores)... i don't add additional wood chunks when i use them. .. they give off a nice mild cedar flavor. . ..i don't want to overwhelm the fish with smoke.. .

mad max beyond eggdome,[p]This may be a dumb question but what is the difference between a real "grilling plank" and a piece of cedar I cut from a $3 cedar fence piece? Could I not use the fence piece? I can get about 6 planks from a $3 board.

edbro9,
not a dumb question at all. .. .lots of folks buy cedar shingles and use them. . .just make sure it isn't pre treated wood and then use all you want ... .

edbro9, I buy untreated Cedar Fence at Home Depot and cut into 17-1/2 in. lengths to fit the Large BGE. Can stack two (one on grid, one on extender) and rotate to get full-effect. Also use Alder chucks, but isn't necessary.

RoadKill,[p]Thanks, good to know. I'm too cheap to buy a single $10 plank from a BBQ store when I can get them this way. Now, if I could only find alder cheaply.
