Is it better on the bottom or the top?!

Fellow Eggheads, [p]I know the majority of you light your egg like I do, from the top. However, the original instructions say to light the egg from the bottom. I use a MAP torch, and loving doing it that way. The only problem is that on my slow cooks the coals seem to burn straight down in the middle. So any wood chips on the sides never get used on my long cooks, just the ones in the middle.. Only happened once, but I actually ran out of fuel, and still had 3/4 a load of lump left on the outside edges of egg. Don't get me wrong, pork butts are coming out awesome every time, but I would like to get a couple more hours of smoke. And I know that meat only absorbs the smoke for a short period of time, I just want to watch it smoke all day long! [p]Nice subject line, huh! Got some of you guessing!!

locolongball,
ive only had the center burn happen with wicked good. im in the habit of pushing the lump toward the center with a wiggle rod once about 6-8 hours into a cook now.
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
locolongball,
You light on the top, and in burns straight to the bottom anyways. Remember that you don't need to see the smoke to taste it. Sounds like you are doing alright! You might go heavier with the chips in the center of your pile if it is burning that way, but having chips throughout won't hurt. You might also try using chunks.
Just a couple idears. Back to the grind!

locolongball,
I like it on top with a little green gel then use my wiggle rod from the bottom.[p]
This should bring out the Stump.[p]

Well being Mr. Contrary, I have been starting my fires on the bottom with the golf club and then lighting from the top also. This has been for grilling and not long and slows. I might try just a bottom light on my next long and slow.[p]Toy Man
