Fire Grate Peeling?

Anyone ever had an issue with their Fire Grate peeling? Was prepping for an overnighter tonight and cleaning everything out when I came across a bunch of what looked like thin metal shards in my ash. When I started examining, realized they were from the Fire Grate. At first I thought they were just caked ash, but it looks like the underside has a metallic color on the underside. Still might be ash, but wanted to check with everyone here first.
