No Smoke No Joke

So I'm one of those who buys mass amounts of lump when on sale.  Broke open an old bag today for a cook and didn't get the regular VOC burn off as usual.  No grey smoke atl.  Having been at this a bit, i let the egg burn at temp a good half hour before the cook.  Held my hand over the top vent testing the smell off and on but no greasy smell at all.  Anyone experience this or might shed some light on why?  Possibly older lump burns cleaner?  Or should I just crack another can and sit my Irish ass down and relax?  And Happy St. Paddy to all.
