I'm in the market for a new set of skewers.  I've read review after review on Amazon, but I'm curious what y'all use and what you love / hate about them.

+1 on the flat skewers.  I've got some flat 10" Cuisinart skewers, and I like that they are shorter than the ones I used previously.  It makes arranging them on the grid much easier.

i like the double prong type, these were just ss weld wire bent up. nothing fancy except for the kafta

I got a set like above from 316 tig rod. Definitely need double or flat, so when you flip the food does too

I've got the Weber set with the rack etc. they are flat as well. My only complaint would be that they are a little short.

I've taken to deconstructing my kabobs. I cook the proteins to temp desired and roast the veg in a basket. I feel I get better carmelization on both items that way and I don't have to kill the proteins to get the veg the way I want them. Prolly not the most dramatic service, I do family style over rice usually. Cheers.

Though I have various sizes and styles of metal ones purchased or gifted over the years I still prefer flat disposable bamboo ones.

I don't remember the last time I used skewers. At least 10-15 years ago. Really. I have a set of this type... somewhere. A gift, I'm sure.


Don't forget, the brass heads get really, really HOT!

and I like them a lot, and they're flat enough that usually I can flip a skewer and the meat, shrimp, etc., move properly with the skewer, but they're narrow enough that once in a while a piece or more will rotate on the skewer instead of staying the way I stuck it on in the first place.  I wouldn't mind if they were a little wider.

These are on Amazon UK, nice and wide so they hold the food when you turn it.

I went to my local Korean grocery store (K-Mart).  They have very cheap flat skewers.

Those are the ones. If you have an adjustable rig you can lay the skewers on the crossbars and you have a really nice tandoor style grill. All the marinade stays on the kebab since there is no grid in that setup. I use it all the time. Round skewers roll around but the flat stay perfectly on the crossbars.

I picked these up at a Middle Eastern supermarket here in Houston. I like them because they are about 1" wide, and I can lay them across the rim of the base and close the lid on them. I think they were $2 each.

The kafta looks wonderful... I need to make those again this week.  It's been too long.

I bought two Firewires several years ago, thought they were cool in being able to curve around inside the Egg, but I wound up not liking them because I had a lot of trouble flipping them so the top of the meat would be on the bottom.  They're just round wire, so the meat very easily rotates, and I found that frustrating.  I use skewers now.

I thought the concept had merit, when I was considering purchasing them. That night I used a round skewer on some chicken. That ended my desire for any round skewer, ever.

I have found out that wood handles for skewers just burn over time and also the flat no handles work on my large or medium with the lid closed.  Many Meditterean stores carry them.

I have tried and bought several types over the years but for just  regular part individual serving heavy bamboo round work well when soaked in water for an hour or so.

I picked these up at an estate sale.  New in box - made in Japan in 1972.  They will no doubt be my daughters when I tap out.  I like old stuff like this.

Saw these today at the kitchen accessory store, looked pretty cool, and their disposable, making cleanup a breeze.  Guess you could use two regular bamboo skewers for the same effect.  The Firewires I have are a PITA to clean.

My All Clad set of 8 are nice, but the large tab gets hot.  Pitt Mitts take care of it though.

 A couple of years ago at a friends for dinner I saw the flat skewers. Today I have 4  sets of flat stainless skewers with curved or twisted handles that are formed to make the skewer one piece. Never going back to another type. The flat stainless skewers  hold all types of food really securely, don't roll around on the grate, and clean up very easily. Just pick up the twisted handle and flip the whole skewer with out loosing any of your tasty ingredients down between the ribs of your grate. another advantage is that the flat metal skewer has more surface area and transfers heat into the center of  I recommend a number of sets in various sizes for different types and sizes of food.
